Author Protection Guide

Is That Publisher Offer Real?

Major publishers do not email authors out of the blue. Take five minutes here before you reply — and before you pay anyone anything.

How Scammers Operate

How This Scam Works

Scammers find self-published authors online, pose as acquisitions editors from famous publishers, praise the book, dangle a big advance, then demand upfront fees for "insurance," "returns clearance," or "rights paperwork." Real acquisitions never work this way.

The Five-Minute Check

1. Check Email Domain

2. Call the Switchboard

3. Verify Payment Direction

Check the email address, not the name. Real publishers use their company domain, never Gmail or lookalike domains.

Call the publisher's main switchboard using a number YOU find on their official site. Ask if the person exists.

Real publishers pay you, never the reverse. Legitimate deals never require author payment to receive funds.

4. Search Offer Wording

5. Require Official Letterhead

Search the exact wording of the offer in quotes — scam scripts get reused and reported across online writer forums.

Request the offer on letterhead, then verify through the publisher's official contact page before responding further.

The one rule that beats every scam.

No legitimate publisher will ever ask you to pay money to receive money. The moment payment flows from the author toward the deal, it is the scam.

If You Have Already Sent Money

Red Flags in the First Email

Watch for unsolicited praise; famous names paired with free email addresses; intense pressure to act within days; requested payment by wire, gift cards, or crypto; documents styled with odd fonts; and outright refusal to take a live telephone call.

Contact your bank immediately about reversing payment. Save all emails as evidence. Report the incident to reportfraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov. Never pay anyone offering to "recover" your money — that is a second scam targeting victims.
